By the end of February, all of our tracks were “in the can” (as they say in the biz).
Mark from Williamson Magnetic Recording had given us a rough mix of all 13 tunes and we prepped for our upcoming mixing sessions by listening excruciatingly close to each song, taking notes and discussing amongst ourselves about elements of each song that needed to shine.
Over the course of a couple of weekends in March and April, we returned to the studio to get the mix we wanted. One that would stand out best on vinyl. Mark expertly guided us through the process.
The thing about recording to tape, and keeping it analog, is that it limits the “studio magic.” It became quite apparent why some of the greatest albums of the 70s took years to complete. You can’t default to the “fix it in the mix” mentality that exists when using DAWs programs. Back in “the old days, if you didn’t hear what you liked, you’d go back and record it again…if you had the green. Luckily, we had what we wanted and Mark worked his magic to tweak the mixes just so. We are stoked with how our tunes sound!
